Hola:
My name is Rafael Murillo Pelayo. Welcome to my website where I am proud to show you my beautiful home in Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
Loreto was founded in 1697 by Jesuit missionaries. The Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto was founded in the town in 1752. The town served as the capital of the province of Las Californias from its founding until the capital was moved to Monterey on February 3, 1777. The Spanish Fathers found a steady spring of fresh water on this site which allowed for habitation and settlement.
I am a divemaster with the Dolphin Dive Center in Loreto where I have lived for over 40-years. We are blessed here by the spectacular beautiful scenery where the Sierra de la Giganta meets the desert and the Sea of Cortez.
The warm, sheltered waters of the Sea of Cortez are a natural nursery for a variety of breeding and spawning marine species. Majestic blue whales, displaced from all but a handful of their breeding grounds worldwide, calve in the Sea, along with fin, sperm, pilot and humpback whales. Loggerhead, black and green sea turtles nest along the Sea of Cortez coastlines. The islands of the sea are also important breeding grounds for sea lions and seals, as well as nesting and stopover sites for hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds.
Unique sea creatures such as giant manta rays, Mexican rockfish, Cortez angelfish and roughjaw frogfish also inhabit the Sea of Cortez. Dolphins, yellowtail tuna, dorado, groupers, snappers and shrimp are supported by the sea.
An abundance of plankton allows for the existence of large schools of small fish such as sardines and anchovies that live close to the oceans surface. They, in turn, are sustenance for larger fish, marine mammals and huge populations of waterfowl.
Besides diving, I love taking my family kayaking and visiting the endless limestone and basalt ridges, valleys, and moderate-elevation ranges in the mountains behind Loreto.
I hope you enjoy your visit to my site and if you ever wish to come to Loreto, please call me and I would be happy to share with you some exciting adventures that are available in Loreto.
